How to Install Myst in Windows 3.1 in DOSBox
« on: April 11, 2012, 11:00:32 am »
I wanted to install MYST on my CAL computer, because we do things like that.  Unfortunately, I only have a 16-bit version of MYST and that can't be run in Windows 7.  So, how do?

I installed DOSBox, a MS-DOS emulator, thinking that it would work there because DOS is a 16-bit operating system.  However, DOS complains that you "need Windows hurr durr".  So I installed Windows 3.1!

Windows 3.1, although old, is not yet abandonware and requires a disk to be legally installed - I'm sure you can find one in your grandparents' attic or something.  Once you have obtained a copy of Windows 3.1, it can be ran in DOSBox.

I will be using the F drive as my Windows install (a removable drive), but I will be mapping it to C.  NEVER install Windows 3.1 directly on your C: drive unless you know what you're doing, because you can screw up the files on your native Windows installation.

Other drives: D: is the Myst CD, E: is the Windows 3.1 installation disk.

Code: [Select]
Z:\> mount c F:\
Drive C is mounted as local directory F:\

Z:\> mount d D:\
Drive D is mounted as local directory D:\

Z:\> mount e E:\
Drive E is mounted as local directory E:\

Then, install Windows 3.1.

Code: [Select]
Z:\> E:
E:\> setup

Run the setup on default settings.

Next, you'll need to install some drivers.  Use this guide here, because it's great!

Morgan actually installed Windows 3.1 on his flashdrive. That is what he is running MYST off at the moment.
If you need anything Minecraft (server) related. Ask this guy.

I have the old school DOS on floppy drives. I kind of want to install it. But I'm debating using a full computer or using DOSbox. HALP.

I don't want to open the package. I know it's not worth anything, but I still don't want to open. Maybe later..

You should save it and then sell it in 2040 for 500 dollars as an antique
